Article: Happy 7th Anniversary, EL Mariel! #PitbullHistory #FelizCumpleanosELMariel

Written by Joyce J on October 31

Seven years ago on this day (October 31, 2006) in Pitbull history, his second studio album ‘El Mariel’ was released. The album (which had been leaked onto the internet four days prior) featured the well-known singles “Ay Chico (Lengua Afuera)”, “Bojangles”, “Born n Raised”, “Fuego”, “Be Quiet”, and “Dime (Remix)”.

“This album, to me it’s not only entertaining, but it’s educating at the same time”, Pitbull said in an NPR interview. Whether it’s engaging beats, lyrics, or style, Pitbull always found a way to incorporate his Cuban/Latino roots into his music while giving fans a sneak peek into his personal life and where he came from. Something he is still passionate about to this day.

The “educational” goal that Pitbull had for ‘El Mariel’ was getting Americans to know their history. ‘El Mariel’ paid homage to the historical event of the El Mariel boatlift in 1980 in which his father, Armando, Sr., served as a liaison bringing over 500 Cubans from Cuba to the United States. On a much deeper and personal level, ‘El Mariel’ meant a lot more to Pitbull than education. His father had passed away in May, and he devoted the album in honor of his memory.

At its debut, ‘El Mariel’ landed on the Billboard 200 charts at #17 and sold 48,000 copies during that week. Overall, the album sold a total of 189,499+ copies. As for the singles: “Ay Chico (Lengua Afuera)” peaked at #92 on the Billboard Hot 100, #99 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts, and #19 on the Billboard Rap charts. “Bojangles” came in at #91 and #89 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop song charts, and “Dime” was #16 on the Latin Song charts.

If you’re new fan getting to know Mr. Worldwide, this is one album you should defiantly get your hands on if you haven’t already! With hard beats and saucy rhythms, between interchangeable verses of English and Spanish, accompanied by life, historical and political/social lessons throughout, you’ll get to know Pitbull on a much more deeper level.

!Feliz Cumpleaños, El Mariel!

For the past week or so, I’ve been adding more video captures of Pitbull’s music videos ranging from 2003 to 2012 to the photo gallery. Old classics like Culo”, “Dammit Man”, & “Ay Chico and chart toppers such as I Know You Want Me”, “The Anthem” & “Give Me Everything; and rarities like Karmasutra” & “Let It Loose plus a motherload of collaborations all contribute to the collection. There are over 90 sets, so enjoy!

There are over 11,000 images in the gallery now, and I will also be making more screen captures from older TV appearances AND posting older photos from events, concerts, and photoshoots over time. Be on the look out for those and thanks for all of the support!
